Forgive and Change Your Locks

Driving down the street one day I had one of those rare opportunities to share a bit of wisdom with my son. Someone close to us had made a habit of stealing stuff and selling or trading it to finance her drug habit. When her latest relationship went south last year she asked if she and her children could come live with us.

Our quiet and predictable lives were soon turned upside down. A steady stream of late-night visitors turned our quiet little home into her personal party house. The children and i learned to ignore and adapt. Things started to disappear. Mysterious charges were appearing on my bank statement. I learned to keep my financial records and all the Christmas gifts hidden in my trunk. My car keys never left my pocket. She - and her meth-heads friends - still managed to rob us blind.

Back to that special moment with my son. I finally figured out we had to forgive her. Meth can cause people to make bad choices.
Holding on to anger and resentment won't change the past. Or her. Only through forgiveness can we get past the hatred and focus on much better thoughts.

So i tried to share that little tidbit of wisdom with him. As we reached our destination he added one final thought - " And we need to change the locks!"

Here are some tips to help you protect your home.
